General Tso Tofu
General Tso Tofu is a popular dish at Christmas in some families. It’s quite simple to make and very suitable for dinner or a party.
What is General Tso Tofu?
General Tso chicken is an old and authentic Hunan dish created in Taiwan in 1952. And the General Tso Tofu is a dish evolved by the General Tso chicken as a vegetarian version. It is made of fry tofu and General Tso sauce. Which are tastes sweet and sour. And liked by many vegetarians.
Tips
1. You can add tofu and starch in a freezer or plastic bag to coat the starch on the tofu.
2. Use the firm or extra firm tofu both work great in this recipe.
3. Serve it with rice is the perfect combination.
General Tso Tofu Recipe
INGREDIENTS
1 block firm tofu, cut into small cubes
3-4 tablespoons corn starch
2 tablespoons olive oil
Cooked sesame seeds
For the general tso sauce
2 tablespoons Brown sugar
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
3 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
3 tablespoons clear water
1 tablespoon sesame oil
4 green onions, chopped
5 sliced ginger, minced

How to make General Tso Tofu
1. Wrap the tofu with a kitchen towel and press it with heavy objects for 20 minutes.
2. Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce,3 tablespoon of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of ketchup,1 tablespoon of light soy sauce and 3 tablespoons of clear water in a bowl and mix well to make the general tso sauce.
3. Wrapped tofu with corn starch. Then, heat a wok with oil, and stir-fry tofu until golden. Transfer it on a plate and set aside.
4. Heat a wok with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, green onion and ginger under middle heat for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the general tso sauce and stir-fry them evenly for 2 minutes.
5. Add chili and tofu in the wok. And continue to cook for 3 minutes. Transfer it on a plate and sprinkle green onion and sesame on it. Serve.

Made this tonight and my nine-year-old gymnast daughter LOVED it, as did my older daughter and wife. She asked if we can start having it every Thursday night, and given how picky she is about food, that’s saying something. Thank you!!!
This is SO good! I use seitan in place of tofu, due to soy allergy and use coconut aminos in place of soy sauce. Such a good flavor!
